White Swan

|
|
The White Swan was situated on Edmund Street and
has now been converted into offices. This pub
closed in 1999; the door on the left in the photo below led to the Cob R, while on the right was the Cygnet Lounge. |

Mr William Proctor, who was licensee
of the pub and the brewer at The White Swan Brewery (The White Swan was a
pub that brrewed its own beer and also sold to ther pubs) won a "Very Highly
Commended" Diploma - in other words Fourrt Prize - in Class 3 for "The Best
of and Original Gravity of Frrom !9 to 21 Brewers' Pounds. That's 1053
degrees to 1058 degrees Original Gravity) at the International Beer
Competition of the 25th Annual Brewers' Exibition held at the Agricultural
Hall, London in October 1903. He was very proud of this as he was up against
brewers from all over the country, the Empire and abroad in general. There
were an awful lot more breweries in the world then than there are now. |
