The Commercial Hotel was situated on the High Street. This pub was also known as The Borough Bailiff. It closed in 2020.

An old Coaching Inn whcih has been much altered. The building was surveyed in 1976 and described in the report. There is evidence for a small timber framed house on the south eastern part of the site before this building was built. Both ends of he present house appear to be cross wings, the 19th century re roofing conceals this. Although it is presumed that at least the north wing was timber framed there is no evidence of timber framing at ground level on either end. The north wing extended one bay further but this has been re built. Below the north wing is the older part of the cellar and there is evidence that the north wing was the service wing. A painted ceiling may be a later improvement. Between the two wings is a long range of building with two large fireplaces with no evidence of timber framing at ground level. The ceiling beams are of two sizes, the smaller being 17th century and the larger are earlier. The cross passage was away from the hearth indicating a supra-vernacular hall and cross-wing house of medieval origin. The Oak Room in the North wing could be a service wing of a house earlier than 1530 with an open hall, this may have been reconstructed around 1700. The staircase wing was added about 1690-1700. (Hutton, B) The building appeared in an article in the Journal in 2012 with a similar description to authority. A handout for a walk round Knaresborough in 2011 records a very complex building with an early 19th century facade. The painting in the western room (Oak Room) is early 16th century. Beyond the through-passage are two rooms, now bars, which were probably the Hall each with stone fireplaces. At the east end there seems to have been another timber cross wing of three bays. A staircase and turret were built behind the Hall in the late 17th century.
