The East House was situated at 18 Spital Hill. This pub closed in 2013, initially being converted into a bookmakers, then into a shop. On New Year's Day 1960, Somali man Mohamed Ismail shot five people in the pub, killing three and wounding two before barricading himself in the outdoor Gents' toilet, subsequently being disarmed by two unarmed Police officers. The shooting occurred at 10:45pm, the pub having its 10:30pm closing time extended due to the holiday.
