Dorset Arms

Dorset Arms, Poplar

The Dorset Arms  was situated at 377-379 Manchester Road. This pub was built as a private house in 1860, but by 1861 had been converted to pub use, expanding into the neighbouring property in 1883.  In 1898 it was leased to the Mann, Crossman & Paulin Brewery of Whitechapel, and it sold that brewery’s beers until it was taken over by Watney’s.  In 1913 the pub was demolished and rebuilt as a two storey building. The pub closed in 1997 and has since been demolished once more and replaced by a modern office block.

My great uncle, James Sime Smith was landlord at the pub for many years.
